 Ice Cane Tournament – 2010

 History:History of the idea of the “Ice Cane Tournament.”  Shawn Burr, former Detroit Red Wing and NHL player for 16 seasons played in the Silver Stick tournament as a youth.  He and Red Wings Alumni Business Manager, Dave Goetze, met at breakfast one morning in the fall of 2009.  Burrzie suggested we ought to do something for the older NHL players and start it in Port Huron the home of Silver Stick Hockey in North America founded in 1963 at McMorran Arena.  Burr’s next statement was “Getzy, get it done.”  Goetze, Ice Cane Tournament Director, then took the lead and got the right committee members together to make it happen including Larry Kinney - Founder of Datapak Services Corporation, Kinney Management Group, and the Port Huron Icehawks; Dennis Hextall – IHL Commissioner, Red Wings Alumni President, and former NHL player; Rick Dionne – Earl Smith Distributing; Jim Greaux – Play It Again Sports; Larry Smith – Radio First; Shawn Burr – Founder of Shawn Burr Foundation, Past President of Red Wings Alumni; Steve Emery – Hockey Official; and Rob Churchill – Hockey scheduler and amateur player.  The rest you can say will make history.  Please join us in this inaugural event. 

 When:  Friday –Sunday; February 5 – 7, 2010 (hockey hunting season)

 Where:          McMorran Place Arena (701 McMorran Blvd., Port Huron, MI  48060) 

Rules: 5 on 5 tournament   Tie games determined by shot-out of   3 minute warm-up (goal is to turn one game per hour)

Play:  3 – 10 minute stop time periods   2 – 2 minute intermissions                       

NO checking, no slapshots, no fighting (Alumni rules)                        3 age divisions:      Open Division (18 yrs.
